ABOUT US
Who are the Wild Pelicans?
We are a club
that enjoys long distance endurance riding, having fun with friends, fostering a
unique brotherhood, committing to our lifestyle and doing some good in our
community as we enjoy life together.
We desired the feeling of a "brotherhood." We created a club that would help us
fulfill that need. A few of us decided we needed a deeper bond. This need
brought us to this point.
We took our example from the archetypal and timeless wild pelican, once thought
to be extinct.
The wild pelican flies the coasts of Louisiana and the entire south United
States; flying carefree, but also being known for spectacular dives from high
altitudes into the water to capture its food. We felt it was a great example of
our own zest for life, attitude of doing our "own thing" as well has having a
degree of boldness and a sense of adventure.
The wild pelican is dedicated to its own and will literally pluck its own skin
to feed its young. This is the example we seek to emulate - not to pluck our
skin, but to be that dedicated to our club; to be ready to give of ourselves.
Dedication - not just a word, but action and intent - pure and simple.
One morning while drinking coffee, a few of us decided on the name "Wild
Pelicans." We looked at the pelican many times as we rode all over the coastal
areas of Louisiana and the southern United States.
Even though it was not a "scary animal," nor was it particularly foreboding, we
just liked the name. It said what we felt and invoked an idea of fun. Later,
we found the Wild Pelican logo, who we affectionately call "Pete."
We also made sure that no other club or organization had this logo as part of
their own colors or patch.
We then formed a group of riders desiring brotherhood, commitment to our group,
harder riding, and more fun.
In our eyes, commitment is the key, thus our motto: D.B.F.R.
Like the wild pelican, our brotherhood is alive, as is our desire to have fun
and share a camaraderie only experienced by riding (flying) in the wind with
those we care for deeply.
Our preferred method of riding is in flocks or groups, long distances, and all
night and day, whenever we can.
Riding in the wind is one thing, but riding in it for hours on end is another
thing completely. Man and machine, becoming one soul, one spirit.
The wild pelican is equally at home alone or with others. Truly free, choosing
with whom it flies.
We choose our "flock," as well, sharing with them as true brothers and sisters.
We allow females in our club.
Our flock may not be large; in fact, we don't care how big the flock is, we
just want to know who we can count on when things get dicey, or need to get
real.
Wild Pelicans are all about commitment.
The purpose of the Wild Pelicans is to foster dedication, brotherhood, fidelity
and mutual respect among the membership and to preserve a "true brotherhood" of
bikers within our flock.
We love the long distances and open road.
Becoming a Wild Pelican is to be a long distance rider and the Saddle Sore 1000
ride is a great way to demonstrate that love for riding, so we use that as a
measure of a person's ability to ride hard and long.
Our motto, "DBFR," represents what we feel are the ideal qualities found in
dedicated bikers and riders.
Dedication - Brotherhood - Fidelity - Respect
Not just words, but a code and tenet of our Club!
